Objectives

- Promote the overarching goal for (ecologically) sustainable development in Malaysia by raising awareness for a national goal and strategy for Sustainable Living in Malaysia (SLiM), in every sector of individual and collective endeavour

- Connect with the global agenda for sustainable development by re-visiting the UNCED Documents 1992 (Rio Declaration and Agenda 21) and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation 2002, in order to enhance the ecological sustainability of our own national development plans

- Take cognisance of the current state of our planet as reflected in the WWF International Living Planet Report 2006 and to recognise and honour our inter-generational responsibilities

- Consider the overall implications of growing urbanisation in Malaysia and the path for urban development in the 21st century

- To review the current state of local government and the implementation of Local Agenda 21 as critical to effective local governance towards sustainable living

- Encourage prudent and informed decision-making, full compliance and enforcement, in implementing the many national policies and plans while respecting the fragile ecosystem services that are critical to life on our planet

- Introduce the Ecological Footprint Analysis (a tool that effectively measures sustainability) as a possible sustainable development indicator at national, and local levels, which will assist decision makers in sustainable use of natural resources and protection of critical ecosystems
